Police in Kenya have hurled tear gas canisters to break up protests in Nairobi and several other towns and cities, accusing the president of poor governance and demanding his resignation, despite his dismissal of nearly the entire Cabinet last week.

Last week, President Ruto called for a “dialogue” as he fired his entire cabinet and the head of the police force resigned. The protest movement is largely co-ordinated online by young Kenyans, many of whom have rejected talks and are calling for Mr Ruto “to go”.

Kenyan police used teargas to disperse protesters in some of the nation’s biggest cities, shuttering shops and offices in their central business districts. Its currency and dollar bonds weakened.
